"Fighting Entropy" - Escalante Canyons

This image was taken during the very wet Spring of 2005, and is located just behind Dance Hall Rock on the Hole in the Rock road in the Escalante River canyon system. This is classic slickrock country, and I have to admire how this cottonwood tree was able to establish itself and survive.

Since this carved hole has such steep and smooth walls, it has been suggested to me that in a way this cottonwood is a carnivorous tree, since any animal that falls in will likely be trapped and die ... thus decaying into nutrients for the tree.
